Wine 11: Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé 2018

For our last stop in France we head south, to one of the most beautiful wine appellations: Bandol on the Côte d’Azur, the French riviera.  One of the most coveted French holiday destinations, it is known the world over for its glamour and beauty. From the see-and-be-seen-on beaches such as Saint Tropez and the boardwalks of Cannes to the lavender fields of Grasse and the medieval villages of Èze, the region overflows with places to explore.

We proceed straight to the highest slopes of Bandol, to the natural amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, where the handsome “bastide” of Pibarnon is situated, the office of Château de Pibarnon and home to its owners, the de Saint Victor family. The vineyards are grown on undulating hills surrounded by olive trees, cypresses, figs, pink laurels, pines and oaks trees – a real corner of paradise in Provence.

Our wine today is the Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé 2018.

When the Saint Victor family bought the property in 1978, there were only 3.5 hectares planted – today there are 50. Every summer they carve new terraces out of the steep hillsides and plant more vines. The secret of Château de Pibarnon is in the soil. Unlike the rest of Provence, the soils date back to the Triassic period – 150 million years older than any other domaines in Provence! The chalky and limestone qualities and the altitude of the vineyards strike a perfect balance between soil and climate, giving the wines a velvety elegance. Mourvèdre is the star of the show at Pibarnon with the majority of the estate is focused on it with only 5% Grenache planted. On average, the vines are 35 years old; producing low, concentrated yields. Other varietals include Cinsault (used in the Pibarnon Rosé), as well as Clairette and Bourbelenc which is used in the Pibarnon White.

The 2018 rosé will compliment all the Mediterranean dishes that you will pair it with as well as sweet dishes and those using rare spices. The nose is very elegant and full of liquorice and sweet spices. The wine boasts a long, tasty and saline finish with elegant tannin. A classic from the Domaine, which they have been developing for the past 40 years.
