Last week we had the privilege of hosting Bodegas Vega-Sicilia for their first-ever visit to South Africa. Export Manager Puri Mancebo-Hobete joined us for three very special tasting and dinner events to guide us and our guests through a selection of wines. These included a dry Furmint and an Aszu 5 Puttonyos from their Oremus estate in Tokaji, Hungary; the Pintia from Toro, the Macán from Rioja which is in partnership with Benjamin de Rothschild and lastly from Ribera del Duero; the Alion, Valbuena and of course the much coveted Unico.
We had sold out tastings at Auslese in Cape Town, Mosaic in Pretoria and the Saxon Hotel in Johannesburg – evenings of top class food preceded by a tutored tasting including the following wines:
Tokaj Oremus Furmint Mandolas 2011
Bodegas Pintia 2008
Bodegas Alion 2011
Bodegas Rothschild & Vega-Sicilia Rioja Macan 2010
Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Valbuena 2004
Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Unico 2004
Tokaji Oremus Aszu 5 Puttonyos 2005
During dinner, the Furmint was served with the starters, and the 2002 vintage of both the Valbuena and Unico with the main course. We finished off with the 2005 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos which was paired with dessert.
This was indeed a week to remember; not only for the experience to taste these magnificent wines, but also for the opportunity to host Spain’s finest wine producer in South Africa.
