Dear Reader,
Do you love the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Picture yourself standing outside the Pope’s castle in Avignon, and then hopping into a car and driving just 30 minutes north-east to Gigondas. It’s a short trip and, just like the reds of Châteauneuf, those of Gigondas are also based around the Grenache grape.
Louis Barruol is 14th generation winemaker at Château de Saint Cosme, presiding over 14 hectares of mostly Grenache vines and many of them very old – we are talking over 100 years of age with some vineyard plots. The Gigondas 2021 is a blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvédre, 14% Syrah and just 1% Cinsault. The wine is matured for twelve months prior to release – 30% of it in concrete tanks and the balance in oak casks, of which just 20% is new.
If you are a fan of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, we highly suggest you transport yourself to the Southern Rhône, but this time through a secret portal and in the form of this Gigondas gem for just R 695 a bottle. We also received a limited number of magnums of the 2020 – only 12 available.
