Great Domaines was very saddened to hear the news of the passing of legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape producer Henri Bonneau.
Henri Bonneau was the winemaker and proprietor of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate and namesake in southern Rhône, and while his wines were extremely coveted and rare, he believed that they should not fetch exuberant prices. He passed away on the 21st of March 2016 due to complications with diabetes.
He was a traditionalist and did very little to interfere with the wine making process, which gave his wines the standout quality for which he became famous. Monsieur Bonneau would only release his flagship and best wine in years of outstanding quality – his Cuvée Spéciale – and this made his wines all the more popular. With the potential to age for decades, these wines were highly sought after throughout the world. He claimed not to know what his average yields were, and kept to the family age old traditions right up until his most recent vintage. Henri’s son Marcel was working closely with him and has now taken over the reins at the estate.
The wine world has been rocked by this sad news, and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
