The Mad Hatter of Marsannay

This particular Burgundian’s name may not feature alongside the star-studded roll call of domaines that glide off collective fine wine lips, and that is precisely what makes Sylvain Pataille and his wines so special. Taking into account the general increased pricing of Burgundy’s most sought-after wines, Pataille’s range provides welcome relief both in terms of quality and price. With GD’s annual allocation campaign for the 2020 vintage of Burgundy not far off, we invite you to have a conversation with us around the state of Burgundy, to order some Sylvain Pataille and reconnect again with wines that make Burgundy so special.

Dear Reader,

Sylvain Pataille is very much at the forefront of organic and biodynamic viticulture and beyond what he puts into the bottle from his own vineyards, he also consults to many of the top domaines in Burgundy. Pataille’s family never owned any vineyards of their own – he finished his studies in Beaune and purchased his first hectare in the village of Marsannay in 1999.

Consulting oenologist Sylvain Pataille…produces brilliant wines that number among the Côte d’Or’s finest values.
William Kelley for Wine Advocate

With about fifteen hectares to his name today, Pataille’s focus remains on Marsannay, with a large portion planted to Aligoté, together with some Chardonnay and Pinot noir. The purple labels that adorn each bottle of Sylvain Pataille wine have become somewhat of a polite joke amongst the GD team. Pataille will be the first to admit he is no salesman or marketer! He is known for his expertise in the vineyards and is greatly respected by his peers.

Horse-ploughed soils, biodynamic principles, low yields and low levels of sulphur – the magic of Sylvain Pataille’s wines happens in the vineyards. He rushes nothing and responds intuitively to what each growing season and the resultant crop tells him.

The fine wine market is in a state of madness, which makes it somewhat ironic that it takes a quirky, Mad Hatter like Pataille to put things into perspective.
