The ‘Carmes’ in the Haut-Brion storm

There was a time when Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion formed part of First Growth estate, Château Haut-Brion. The two properties share the same gravel soils and are increasingly sharing the plaudits from fine wine market voices. See below for what we are offering from Les Carmes Haut-Brion. There is other bordeaux in our cellar and a full list is available on request.

Dear Reader,

Quality has sky-rocketed at Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion and it largely comes down to the investment from owner Patrice Pichet over the past decade, and the talents of winemaker Guillaume Pouthier who used to work with Michel Chapoutier in the Rhône. Just some of Pichet’s investment has included a brand new, state-of-the-art winery which was built in 2016, the acquisition of new vineyard parcels of vines, the replanting of other vines and the adjustment in contour of certain slopes.

Through one of the few négociants we work with, we recently brought in a limited selection of the wines, which they received direct from the Château.

We have just nine three-bottle cases which comprise a bottle each of the Grand Vin 2016, 2017 and 2018Cabernet Franc has started playing a more integral role in this wine. The proportion of Franc sits at around 40% from vintage to vintage, and the rest is between 30-40% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine matures for 24 months in a combination of 65% new barrels and 35% used barrels, tuns, concrete vats and terra cotta amphorae.

Inside this case, there are two bottles each of 2017, 2018 and 2019Le C follows the more traditional blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and then Merlot. The wine normally sees about one-third new oak during maturation for up to two years before it rests in concrete vats until bottling.
