“The 2018 Merlot is deep with its bouquet of crushed raspberry and plums offset by hints of sage, musky animal tones and crushed stone. This is silky and soothing with brisk acids and sweet inner spices, leaving a staining of dark red fruits and lavender tones while tapering off with a coating of sweet tannins. It leaves the palate classically dry with a tug of residual concentration and purple and blue inner floral tones. Enzo Pontoni decided not to produce any Cru Merlot from 2018, and so, all of that juice was used here.” – Eric Guido, Vinous
"Alex Starey combines grapes from hillside and valley floor parcels to produce this wellbalanced, nicely understated Stellenbosch Merlot. Mint and cut grass aromas segue into a palate of plum and red pepper, fresh acidity and firm, spicy tannins. A wine that overdelivers at the price." - Tim Atkin MW
Château Séraphine Pomerol 2019, "This wine is made from 100% Merlot and is being aged in French oak barrels, 40% new, for 12-14 months. The alcohol came in at 14%. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Séraphine opens with the most beautiful perfume of plum preserves, violets, clove oil and cinnamon stick over a core of blueberry compote, Morello cherries and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-coating black and blue fruit preserves with a fantastic line of freshness and beautifully ripe, plush tannins, finishing with loads of mineral and spicy sparks." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
"The 2020 Clos Cantenac is made from 100% Merlot. It has 14.5% alcohol and is aging in barriques, 40% new, for 12 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it opens with compelling notes of plum preserves, boysenberries and blueberry compote, plus wafts of underbrush, red rosesand Sichuan pepper. The medium to full-bodied palate is laden with juicy black fruits, supported by soft tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a peppery lift. 8,000 bottles made." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
The 2014 was produced from 100% Merlot that was hand-harvested block by block and matured in French oak barrels for 20 months (40% was new, 60% was 2nd use). This is a deep, rich and expressive wine, with lovely notes ripe red berries, mocha, truffle, spices and graphite. It is an excellent option for earlier drinking but has the credentials to keep a few more years.
