Say it like musk-a-day. Drink it from Luneau-Papin

Continuing where we left off at the end of last year, Domaine Luneau-Papin is the sixth and final (for now) Loire producer we have added to the portfolio. The wines, all made exclusively from Melon de Bourgogne and Folle Blanche, reflect the diversity of the terroirs within their part of Muscadet. These wines offer pure, unadulterated fine white wine enjoyment that won’t cost you a fortune.

Dear Reader,

To the West, at the mouth of Loire Valley, you will find the region of Muscadet, which is greatly influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. While not a fine white wine heavyweight location in international terms, it is rich in tradition and home to some very special vignerons – if you know where to look.

With a history going back to the 17th century, Domaine Luneau-Papin is a story of the union of two Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine families (Luneau and Papin) brought about by the mutual love for Melon de Bourgogne, the region’s historic grape variety. With the release of three single-vineyard wines in the 1990s from parcels all planted with the Luneau family’s own nursery root stock, everything was put in place for a very exciting future for this Muscadet producer.

“Our range of wines tell the history of each parcel of vines and the influence of the vintages through the centuries as well greeting the rising sun every day with love, joy and confidence. Our grape varieties – Melon de Bourgogne and Folle Blanche – reflect the diversity of the terroirs in which these varieties have been planted by past generations and will be by those to come.
Precision and attention to detail, both in the vineyard and winery, is our daily mantra.
Our domaine is entirely organic and biodynamic.”

In the cellar, grapes are pressed in a pneumatique press, with the strength and duration of pressing dictated by the vintage. Fermentations are all left to begin on their own with the use of only natural yeasts. Following fermentation, wines are left to mature on the lees in underground glass-lined vats for between 6-7 months (the exception being for the Cuvée Excelsior which is matured for twenty months). The wines are not racked off right before bottling.

Our very first offer on these wines takes the form of a 6-bottle mixed case, with 1 bottle each of the wines listed below.

Towards the end of the 1990s, a handful of estates, including Luneau-Papin, agreed on a definition of the cru’s terroir and its richness and diversity around Nantes (communal crus initiative). Long referred to as Schistes de Goulaine, the Domaine’s cru today goes by the name Goulaine, in reference to the Goulaine river.
