Restaurant of the Week: Yamato Japanese Restaurant

Located in the heart of Illovo, those living in the north are spoilt with some of the greatest (and greatest value) sushi in Joburg.

Yamato has been around since 1995. Whilst sushi lovers are sure to feel right at home, don’t think that the menu is limited to rice and fish. A full, traditional Japanese menu is available to those not in the mood for sushi. This includes teppenyaki, miso soup and sticky chicken. All food is made from scratch, including items such as tofu and noodles which many other restaurants will simply outsource to save time and cost.

Yamato is an old word for Japan. The restaurant is family owned, with the passionate Cristina Sato at the helm. Their mission is to strive every day to be the best sushi restaurant in Johannesburg. Keep a lookout for Great Domaines’ wine as well, including the perfect companion to any form of seafood – the Chablis from William Fèvre. Its racy and lean minerality is the perfect complement to the fresh and fragrant Japanese cuisine.
