Tucked away in Roodeport is one of Johannesburg’s best-kept little secrets. An authentic little French restaurant, Les Délices de France has been quietly climbing its way to be ranked as the fourth best restaurant in Johannesburg on review website TripAdvisor.
The restaurant, which is hosted in a converted house in Florida North, is co-owned by Robert Baxa and Claudette Gourjux. Robert hails from Alsace, and is the head of the kitchen. Claudette, who comes from the French capital of fine cuisine, Lyon, oversees the management of the restaurant.
Dishes are kept authentically French – ranging from starters of French Onion soup, Camembert in phylo pastry to mains of Steak Tartare and Duck Confit. Desserts include traditional fare such as brûlées, but how many restaurants can boast an entire menu dedicated to soufflés?
Great Domaines can personally recommend this restaurant for an authentic French culinary experience. You won’t be disappointed. Morgan from Great Domaines is a regular here, and has the following to say:
I have to confess I have eaten one of the best Choucroute here, perhaps because the chef is a true Alsatian. The wine list is also very good, with some of the wines of Great Domaines, such as the Villa Ponciago Fleurie la éserve (because Beaujolais is so close from Lyon, Claudette’s native region). Purple, Sancerre by Alphonse Mellot and Triennes Rosé are also available.
I really enjoy the Springbok Steak, the Salmon Ceviche and more recently a spectacular line fish seasoned in the Asian fashion – splendid.
