Dear Reader,
Donovan likes to wear black and listen to bands like Tool, but behind all of that he is a softly spoken giant of a gentleman. As for his wines, well, they are consistently some of the best to come out of the Cape. Today marks the official release of Donovan’s 2022 vintage of Rall Wines (2021 for the Red).
Now in its fifteenth vintage, the Rall Wines White 2022 is, according to Donovan, possibly his ”favourite to date” and ”certainly the most focused and age worthy white in this year’s release.” This Chenin blanc-dominated blend is produced from grapes grown mainly in the granitic soils of the Paardeberg and, with the 2022, Donovan reveals that there is a chunky portion of Chenin blanc from the Noa vineyard in the White. Always a vintage behind, the Rall Wines Red 2021 is an all-Swartland blend of mostly Syrah, and a true flagship wine for Donovan.
Donovan’s Grenache blanc is always a massive hit. It is a wine that is so expressive and rewarding in its youth. The wine continues to be produced from the same, high altitude bush-vines in the Piekenierskloof.
The Cinsault is arguably one of the country’s best. The wine is labelled as W.O. Coastal Region, but most of the grapes come from old vines in Darling, growing in iron-rich clay soils. 100% whole-bunch and semi-carbonic fermentation – this wine is irresistible and is always one of the first of the Rall Wines range to sell out.
The 2022 Syrah is just the second vintage that Donovan has produced and it has already developed a very loyal following. With an alcohol of 12.5%, this Syrah is produced from one of the schist vineyards that goes into the Ava Syrah. 100% whole-bunch and aged exclusively in concrete tanks, this Syrah is a no-brainer and especially at the price.
These aforementioned wines are available for purchase today. The other wines in the Rall Wines range are on allocation only. Please speak to your Account Manager for details.
