Champagne Marguet Père et Fils Shaman Grand Cru 2017

R750.00 inc. VAT
"Scents of pear, waxy citrus rind, mandarin orange, peach and buttery pastry, Marguet's NV Shaman 17 is medium to full-bodied, pillowy and vinous, with bright acids and chalky grip. It was disgorged in September 2020. As readers will remember, the "17" denotes the base vintage, which is complemented by reserve wines from a solera established in 2010." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

Keermont Fleurfontein Non-Vintage 375ml

R270.00 inc. VAT
"Yellow gold in colour with a copper tinge, the Fleurfontein Non-Vintage exudes aromas of dried apricot, lime marmalade, and ripe orange rind with hints of hazelnut and vanilla. The palate is full and creamy with concentrated flavours of dried fruits and marzipan with a grassy freshness. A central core of acidity gives the wine a long, complex, and succulent finish with a slightly salty touch. Drink now through to 2031." Winemaker's notes

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2021 Magum (09, 10, 11)

"Saturated garnet. An expansive bouquet presents an array of dark fruit and floral qualities that are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, vanilla, pipe tobacco and cedary oak. Stains the palate with concentrated, smoke-tinged cherry liqueur, cassis, fruitcake and candied licorice flavors, braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent depth as well as energy and finishes extremely long and chewy, with resonating florality and sneaky tannins. This is the 2021 release for this always-intriguing wine, and it seems to be leading with its structured, 2010 component right now." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2018 (05, 06, 07)

"This wine was re-tasted prior to this report with similar descriptors to my previous tasting for a report I published earlier this year and the score was the same. A non-vintage blend of three different years and released in 2018, the NV Único Reserva Especial 2018 Release is composed of a blend of 58 barrels from the vintages 2005, 2006 and 2007, younger vintages than the Reserva Especial bottlings from yesteryear. It feels young and not that far away from the current vintage of Único, 2006, which is released at the same time as this. It's mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon, where the aim is to keep a constant character across the different releases. It has a classical profile, with polished tannins and nice subtlety. Comparing it with the 2006 Único, it doesn't seem to have the same elegance, depth and complexity. 17,200 bottles and 216 magnums were filled in June 2014." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2019 (06, 07, 09)

"As I've seen in recent years, the non-vintage blend NV Único Reserva Especial 2019 Release contains younger wines than what the older releases used to me made up of. In this case, it's 2006, 2007 and 2009 and in fact contains wine from the current release of Único, so not much older. It's mostly Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) and some Cabernet Sauvignon. It had a slightly longer élevage in oak, as the blend was put in bottle in June 2015, at the same time as the 2009 Único; therefore, the 2006 and 2007 components were in oak for a longer time. It has a similar character to the 2009, perhaps a little more subtle and elegant but not really more complex, with some tannins and a medium-bodied palate." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Colmant Methode Cap Classique Brut Rosé Non-Vintage

R275.00 inc. VAT
"While Chardonnay makes up 25% of the blend, Pinot Noir leads the dance with 75%. A portion (10%) of the Pinot Noir is macerated on the skins to give the Brut Rosé its colour and signature red berry aroma and flavour. The Chardonnay contributes vivacity, finesse and harmonious elegance. 15% of the base wine is barrel fermented and there is a 15% reserve wine portion blended in. Maturation time on lees is 24 months minimum." - Producer Note

Colmant Methode Cap Classique Sec Reserve Non-Vintage

R270.00 inc. VAT
"Franschhoek, Robertson and Elgin fruit were used in the 52% Pinot Noir and 48% Chardonnay blend. A portion (10%) of the wine underwent fermentation in French oak barrels and 20% of reserve wine from previous vintages was blended in to enhance intensity and complexity. Maturation time on lees is 24 months minimum. The wine was then degorged with the addition of a generous liqueur de dosage which added a unique twist to the gentle aroma and flavour." - Producer Note

BLANKbottle TBC Non-Vintage

R280.00 inc. VAT
"I spent 4 days driving from Avignon all along the Rhône river through Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage, Condrieu to Côte Rôtie. It was fascinating and invigorating. Condrieu’s wines (or rather the ones I tasted), were mineral, fresh and lean with depth in character and complexity - and made from Viognier - a varietal we struggle with in South Africa.SA Viognier are mostly over extracted, rich, sweet and floral. I have access to a really nice block of Viognier on the slopes of the Helderberg mountain facing Stellenbosch. I have been making wine from that block since 2012, but,up until today, have only used it in blends. So I decided to do an experiment. We picked the vineyard in two sections. The first picking on a relatively low sugar and a second picking as a ripe component. A combination of the two were aged for 2 years in old small barrel French Oak - 50% of the final blend. The other 50% was an early picking of the same vineyard the following year. In other words; the final wine is 50% early picking that spent one year in barrel (2018 vintage) and the other 50% a combination of early and late picking aged 2 years in barrel (2017 vintage). And I had no name for the wine. You know, it does happen that sometimes the name and label of a wine just doesn’t happen when it should… My distributers pressured me to get the wine out and after a suggestion by one of the reps, the name became TBC - To Be Confirmed." - Producer Note

Champagne Pol Roger Rich Demi-Sec Non-Vintage

"Light, bright yellow. Ripe pear and nectarine on the fragrant nose, with hints of lemon curd, honey and dried fig adding complexity. Shows very good depth and a supple texture, with sweet poached pear and pit fruit nectar flavors sharpened by a minerally element. Closes silky, broad and gently sweet, with a suave floral quality coming up late. This would make a fantastic pairing with blue cheeses." - Josh Raynolds, Antonio Galloni's Vinous.com

Colmant Methode Cap Classique Brut Reserve Non-Vintage

R264.99 inc. VAT
"Produced before the arrival of sparkling wine guru, Paul Gerber, earlier this year, the Colmant Brut Reserve proves that he has good raw material to work with. Based on the 2017 vintage, but with some raw material, it's youthful, dry and well balanced with lovely restraint and focus." - Tim Atkin MW, South African Special Report

BLANKbottle Familiemoord Non-Vintage

R310.01 inc. VAT
"When it comes to Familiemoord, having all the components of a similar vintage are not that important to me. The 2019 vintage Grenache was a little bit lighter than usual. I had in barrel some 2018 and a little bit of that made the Grenade component a little bit plusher and when you mix different vintages the wine needs to be labelled as a non-vintage. The Grenache fermented whole clusters in an open top fermentation vessel. The 2018 component is from a trellised vineyard in Wellington where the 2019 is from a bush Vine Organically Certified Wellington Vineyard. The Pinot noir from Elgin were fermented 50% whole cluster and the Cinsaut from darling, 100% whole clusters. The fine crunchy tannins that come from the stems give this rather low in acid wine a sense of freshness." - Winemakers notes

Prosecco San Leo Brut Non-Vintage

Colour, bright pale straw-yellow; a fine, clear mousse with a very delicate perlage. Bouquet, Attractively intense, very fruity and aromatic, with hints of wisteria flowers and Rennet apples. Flavor, very well-balanced and appealing, with the extremely delicate almond note that is typical of Glera grapes. - Winemakers notes
