Álvaro Palacios Priorat “L’Ermita” 2015

"Tasting L'Ermita is always an emotional moment, as it's one of the great reds from Spain. The 2015 L'Ermita is 91% Garnacha, 8% Cariñena and 1% split between Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo and PX from the most famous single vineyard in Priorat. It fermented in oak foudre with indigenous yeasts and also had its élevage in foudre, which lasted for 15 months. The juicy freshness of this 2015, citric and vibrant, makes it very different from the rest of the portfolio. This is transparent, precise, like laser cut, chiseled, subtle and elegant, showing very open and expressive, with great freshness and the core of Mediterranean flavors. 2,200 bottles were filled in February 2017. 2015 was a high-yielding vintage in Spain in general and in Priorat in particular. The wines here have little color and feel very ethereal. 2016 is clearly more concentrated, and at the same time, the wines show vibrant acidity and more freshness." - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia Macán 2015

R1,150.00 inc. VAT
"The current vintage of the first wine is the 2015 Macán, fermented in oak vats and matured in new French oak barrels for 12 months, followed by a further five months in oak vats and kept in bottle for almost three years before it's released. 2015 was a warm and dry year, and the wine feels riper when tasted next to the 2016 Macán Clásico, which comes from a very different year. The use of foudres helps to give the wine length and elegance—a good tool to fine-tune warmer vintages like this one. This is stylistically different from 2016, with darker fruit and an earthy touch. It's powerful, with structure and plenty of tannin, a dense wine, with concentration to get polished in bottle. 74,465 bottle, 2,563 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in May 2017." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

R850.00 inc. VAT
"Deep, glistening ruby. Expansive cherry, cassis, potpourri, exotic spice and cracked pepper scents on the intensely perfumed nose; subtle licorice, tobacco and vanilla qualities add complexity. Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia 2015 Tinto is deep, sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering intense, spice- and smoke-tinged red and dark berry compote, violet pastille and cola flavors that become livelier with air. The floral quality gains strength on the strikingly long finish, which leaves smoke and mineral notes behind." Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Domaine Lafarge Vial Fleurie “Clos Vernay” 2015

R480.01 inc. VAT
"Deep ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe cherry and raspberry, along with musky floral and earth notes. Stains the palate with sweet red fruit, lavender pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen and spread out steadily on the back half. Delivers a suave blend of richness and energy and finishes extremely long and juicy, displaying harmonious tannins and resonating florality." - Josh Raynolds, Antonio Galloni's Vinous

Domaine Lafarge-Vial Fleurie “Joie du Palais” 2015

R465.00 inc. VAT
"This offers an additional step up in terms of elegance and complexity with its well-layered nose of red and dark raspberry, warm earth, violet and lovely spice wisps. The sense of refinement continues on the slightly punchier and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the tautly muscular, firm and impressively long finish. This is terrific and absolutely worth considering." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Lafarge-Vial Fleurie 2015

R465.00 inc. VAT
"This is at once more aromatically elegant and slightly fresher as well with its pretty array of red and dark fruit aromas that are laced with hints of spice, earth and black pepper. There is a finer mouth feel to the sleek, delicious and vibrant flavors that are somewhat less powerful and concentrated but better balanced and even more persistent. This is textbook Fleurie that could be enjoyed young or aged for up to a decade, perhaps even longer if desired." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Elio Grasso Barolo “Ginestra Casa Maté” 2015

"There is slightly more structure to the 2015 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté than to the Gavarini Chiniera of the same vintage, and the only differences here are the soils and that this fruit is harvested about ten days later. It's a pretty fascinating demonstration of the power of the single vineyard. The Gavarini Chiniera parcel offers slightly sandier soils, whereas this site is composed of more clay. In rainy years, the Gavarini Chiniera vineyard drains more effectively, whereas the Ginestra's soil retains more moisture in the hot and dry vintages. As a result, in vintages such as this one, Ginestra shows a more compact nature and, in general, provides more impact and more structure. This is a very robust expression, extremely linear and tight. The Ginestra Casa Maté narrowly wins this round. It's another beautiful Barolo." - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi 2015

R330.00 inc. VAT
The classic Haro-styled red 2015 Viña Alberdi, sold abroad with the mention of Reserva and in Spain as Crianza, is a good introduction to the house style: balsamic reds with abundant notes of sweet spices and cigar ash, developed aromas of forest floor and a creamy twist making small concessions for a fresher and cleaner profile in the last few years but keeping the classic style. There are notes of ground tobacco and earth, and the palate is seamless and sleek, with polished tannins and a soft mouthfeel. There are 550,000 bottles of this wine, all produced from a single master blend. It was bottled in September 2018 after two years in American oak barrels.

Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Bussia ‘Cicala’ 2015

"The 2015 Barolo Bussia Cicala is like a little steam train that keeps pushing forward. The wine shows the forward momentum and power of the vintage, imparting ripe and rich primary intensity along the way. This steady and elegant expression of Nebbiolo reveals dried blackberry, tar, licorice, smoke and white truffle. The wine's approach is broad and textured as it rolls over the palate. Some 6,000 bottles were produced." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino “La Cerbaiola” 2015 Magnum

"An earthy display of mineral-encased red fruits and wild herbs lifts from the glass, as the bouquet of the 2015 Salvioni Brunello di Montalcino evolves into a dark mix of ripe black cherry and dusty spices with overarching floral notes. On the palate, soft, enveloping ripe red fruits open up in an unexpectedly approachable and alluring display, with hints of sweet spice and inner florals. With more time, the flavors turn more to the savory spectrum, adding hints of dried herbs, with cascading minerals, all pushed forward by brisk acidity. The finish is long, as its staining red fruits are offset by zesty spices and acids, revealing just a hint of fine tannin beneath it all. This is an especially forward and easy-to-like expression of Salvioni, which I’m tempted to start drinking early, yet there’s enough primary fruit and acids to carry it over the medium term in the cellar."- Eric Guido, Vinous

Vega-Sicilia Alión Ribera del Duero Cosecha 2015

R995.00 inc. VAT
"Produced with 100% Tinto Fino or Tempranillo grapes in a modern and fruit-forward style with generous oak, the 2015 Alión is juicy and intense, cropped from a warm and dry year that delivered a 15% alcohol red that is voluptuous and hedonistic. It matured for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels, mostly French and mostly new. At first I found it quite ripe, with black rather than red fruit, a little earthy and with a touch of licorice and ink. The palate reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins without the quality they had in 2014; it's a little dry on the finish, a riper and more powerful vintage of Alión. The nose improved tremendously with time in the glass as it opened up, but the tannins remained quite present. It might need a little more time in bottle to polish those edges." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
