Paolo Scavino “Rocche dell’Annunziata” Barolo Riserva 2013

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell'Annunziata is powerful and dense in the glass. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is going to need a few years to soften. When I think of Rocche dell'Annunziata, I think of Barolos built on perfume and elegance. I don't see much of that here, at least in the early going. This is an especially extracted style. Hints of red plum, mocha, wild flowers and spice add nuance over time, but the 2013 is not ready yet to show all of its cards.

Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2016

The 2016 Barolo Bric del Fiasc is a powerful, muscular wine. Youthfully austere and tannic, the 2016 is going to need a number of years to come around, but it is magnificent, even in the early going. Layers of building tannins enshroud a core of dark Nebbiolo fruit, with hints of dried herbs, iron, leather and sweet tobacco that develop with a bit of coaxing. As always, Bric del Fiasc has a feral intensity to it. The 2016 is an especially fine edition and also a terrific example of the style of this Castiglione Falletto site.

Paolo Scavino Barolo Bricco Ambrogio 2016

The 2016 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is very pretty in 2016. Medium in body and supple, the Bricco Ambrogio captures all of the personality of the year in a mid-weight style that makes it easy to drink and enjoy young. The balance of fruit, acid and structure is just superb here. Pretty floral and spice overtones add nuance. Bricco Ambrogio is always the most accessible of the Scavino cru Barolos. The 2016 is the finest wine from this site yet.

Paolo Scavino Dolcetto d’Alba 2019

R285.00 inc. VAT
The Paolo Scavino Dolcetto d'Alba is a lean and easy red wine that offers bright primary fruit with plenty of blackberry, black cherry and summer plum. The fruit is presented with naked transparency and bright intensity, making it perfect for a weeknight at home with take-home pizza or cheese flatbread. That dark fruit cedes to earthy tones of clay and crushed stone.

Paolo Scavino Langhe Nebbiolo 2018

R375.00 inc. VAT
Crushed flowers, mint, sweet red cherry and pretty earthy notes all grace Scavino's 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo. Medium in body, with plenty of varietal character, the 2018 has plenty to offer. I would drink it over the next few years.

Paolo Scavino Vino Rosso NV

R225.00 inc. VAT
"Rosso is a blend that represents our autochthon varietals. The grapes from the younger vines of the Estate combined together, offer a fresh, aromatic, charming wine with a Piedmontese character. Brilliant ruby-red with purple hints. Expressive, continuous and delicate aromas of red cherries and spices. Fresh in the nose and in the palate. Supple and joyful structure where the flavors are persistent and of a light nature. A delicious red that expresses the brightness of the youth, to drink over the next year or two. Pretty easy with food pairings. Nice to combine with vegetarian dishes as well as with light antipasti, white meat, bluefish, fresh goat cheeses." - Winemaker's notes
