Bodegas Maurodos San Roman 2015

R450.00 inc. VAT
"The eponymous 2015 San Román was produced with fruit from a dry and warm year, from one of the earliest harvests to date (but records are broken almost every year, and 2017 was even earlier). It's always sourced from old, head-pruned and ungrafted Tinta de Toro vines on stony, limestone and clay soils in different villages of the appellation, including Morales de Toro, Pedrosa del Rey and San Román de Hornija. It fermented in wide stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 24 months in oak barrels, 70% French and the rest American It's ripe, wide, hedonistic and generously oaked. A powerful, generous vintage of San Román. It should age nicely in bottle." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

La Rioja Alta “Viña Ardanza” 2000

R1,750.00 inc. VAT
""Fading medium-red color. Cherry-vanilla, tobacco and dried raspberry on the nose, with subtle baking spices, cedar and herbs adding complexity. Suave red fruit flavors are sweetened by vanillin oak spices and gently propped up by silky tannins. An understated wine that's sure to be dismissed by those who find ostentation in wine a virtue, but this will work wonderfully with grilled or braised meats, or not-so-strong cheeses. And the length of this Rioja is pretty sneaky." - Josh Raynolds, Antonio Galloni's Vinous

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 2011

R350.00 inc. VAT
"I was quite pleasantly surprised by the 2011 Reserva, a wine from an extremely warm year when ripe and excessively developed wines abound. This 2011 seems to have improved with bottle age, and its elegant and balanced side definitely wins over the ripeness of the year. The oak feels very integrated and the palate terribly balanced. A great 2011." - Luis Guitérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Valenciso Rioja Reserva 2012

R365.01 inc. VAT
“Valenciso’s all-Tempranillo Reserva is drawn from 18 parcels on clay-limestone soils, all within a ten-kilometre radius of the winery in Ollauri. Showing the freshness, balance and precision that’s a feature of the bodega’s style, this is graceful, spicy and beautifully nuanced.” - Tim Atkin, MW

Valenciso Rioja Reserva Magnum 2012

R750.00 inc. VAT
"2012 was a warm and dry year, when some vines were blocked and stopped ripening the grapes. Surprisingly enough, many wines have retained more freshness than what the natural conditions of the year anticipated. Valenciso's 2012 Reserva has more stuffing and power than the 2011 and comes from a year that was saved by some rains in September and big temperature contrasts between day and night. It's very tasty, almost salty (the words of Jean Gonon from St Joseph saying "our wines are salty, to be enjoyed with food. There is no room for sweetness in our wines," comes to my mind). It's a modern classical Rioja in the making, still young but showing some development and incipient complexity. These wines develop slowly and nicely in bottle and seem to hit the spot after some eight years after the harvest." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia “Valbuena 5” Cosecha 2014 Magnum

R4,450.01 inc. VAT
“This wine was re-tasted prior to this report with similar descriptors to my previous tasting for a report I published earlier this year and the score was the same. Cropped from an unusually cold and rainy vintage in which they will not bottle Único, the 2013 Valbuena is always released in its fifth year. It’s mostly Tempranillo with 5% Merlot that was put through a three- to four-day cold soak in the oak vats, where it fermented with indigenous yeasts and was pumped over. It matured in new and used 225-liter French and American oak barriques and also in 20,000-liter oak vats, where the larger vessels respect the fruit, especially in a more fragile vintage-like 2013. It’s a very elegant and fresh Valbuena with a developed nose, quite classical with a fine texture, elegant tannins and a supple, long finish where the oak is still quite obvious. I liked it very much and consider it a triumph over the challenges of the year. ” – Luis Gutierrez, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia Alión Ribera del Duero Cosecha 2014

R975.00 inc. VAT
"2014 is a better vintage in Ribera del Duero than in Rioja, and the 2014 Alión shows it. Sourced from 130 hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Ribera del Duero and possibly the most modern of the Vega Sicilia Group wines, it's silky, voluptuous, jammy, ripe and generous without being too much. The grapes fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, and the wine matured in new and second use French barriques for 12 to 14 months. It's quite ripe and powerful yet balanced and with great freshness. The palate is medium to full-bodied with lots of fruit, juicy and showy, modern without excess. 284,284 bottles along with 6,500 magnums and some larger formats were produced. You might want to give it some more time in bottle. It was bottled in June 2016." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia Alión Ribera del Duero Cosecha 2015

R995.00 inc. VAT
"Produced with 100% Tinto Fino or Tempranillo grapes in a modern and fruit-forward style with generous oak, the 2015 Alión is juicy and intense, cropped from a warm and dry year that delivered a 15% alcohol red that is voluptuous and hedonistic. It matured for 12 to 14 months in oak barrels, mostly French and mostly new. At first I found it quite ripe, with black rather than red fruit, a little earthy and with a touch of licorice and ink. The palate reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins without the quality they had in 2014; it's a little dry on the finish, a riper and more powerful vintage of Alión. The nose improved tremendously with time in the glass as it opened up, but the tannins remained quite present. It might need a little more time in bottle to polish those edges." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia Pintia Cosecha 2014

R750.01 inc. VAT
"The 2014 Pintia matured in 75% French and 25% American oak barrels for approximately one and a half years. It is a slightly riper year than 2013, and the wine is more powerful but at the same time I found it extremely aromatic, expressive and open, quite typical from Toro. It is a more elegant style, with less rusticity, and the tannins are fine-grained, present and quite abundant but also quite round. It has a great mouthfeel, with the wild berry, aromatic herbs and spicy flavors lingering in your mouth. This is a great vintage for Pintia. With time in the glass, it still shows some smoky undertones that make it feel quite young." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
