San Román Bodegas Garnacha 2020

R950.00 inc. VAT
"The one red in the portfolio that has a very different profile from the rest is the 2020 Garnacha, a bright ruby-colored varietal wine with a perfumed, floral and decadent nose a little à la Rayas with cherries in liqueur. It has a medium body, fine tannins and a juicy texture, but it's obviously young and undeveloped with primary notes and baby fat. It has 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.6, very integrated, with almost unperceivable oak after 19 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. 2,754 bottles were filled in May 2022." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

San Román Bodegas San Román 2020

R695.00 inc. VAT
"The 2020 San Román had a slightly shorter élevage than the 2019 I tasted next to it. These are wines of very good regularity, showing a ripe and generously oaked profile, ripe, lush and powerful, perhaps a tad lighter and fresher in 2020. 115,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2022." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

San Román Bodegas Prima 2020

R295.00 inc. VAT
"The 2020 Prima used to be the lightest and most approachable of the reds from San Román until the birth of the varietal Garnacha. It was produced with Tinta de Toro and 15% Garnacha and other varieties with 14.5% alcohol and mellow acidity, cropped from a cooler year of lighter and fresher wines. This had a soft vinification with short macerations and an élevage in 3,000- and 4,000-liter oak foudres and 500-liter barrels for 14 months, a regimen that seems to work quite well with the already powerful wines from the region, making them more approachable and better balanced. Delicious. 171,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia Macán 2017

R1,150.00 inc. VAT
"Opaque ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry cola, potpourri and exotic spices, and smoky mineral and vanilla nuances build in the glass. Appealingly sweet, palate-coating red and blue fruit preserve, spicecake, mocha and candied lavender flavors show excellent depth as well as energy and back-end lift. Finishes impressively long, smoky and precise, with polished tannins adding framework and closing grip." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Valenciso Graciano Red 2019

R650.00 inc. VAT
"Graciano has its fans," says Luis Valentín and this wine could add a few more of them. Built on a foundation of acidity and tannin, it's peppery and intense with lots of damson and blackberry fruit, perfumed oak and the shuddering grip that's typical of the variety. - Tim Atkin MW

Valenciso Rioja Rosé 2020

R275.00 inc. VAT
Valenciso Rioja Rosé 2020, "Not for Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso the fashionable Côtes de Provence style of rosé. Instead, they make a deeper coloured "sangrado" style from Tempranillo. Structured, serious and fresh, with lees-derived weight and notes of strawberry, redcurrant and blood orange." - Tim Atkin MW

Valenciso Rioja Reserva Red 2015

R435.00 inc. VAT
Valenciso Rioja Reserva Red 2015, "Back to 2010, is how Luís Valentín describes the style of his 2015, a vintage that he rates highly. Sourced from 29 parcels in Briones, Haro, Ollauri, Rodezno and Villalba, it's a pure Tempranillo that sees 33% new wood and is fresh, floral, textured and refined, with some sweet spices and a core of red berry and black cherry fruit embellished with chalky minerality." – Tim Atkin MW

Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2018

R455.00 inc. VAT
Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2018, "Textbook stuff from the Mugas, this is a pan-regional assemblage of Tempranillo with 30% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. Youthful, structured and refreshing, it's the kind of Reserva that will reward cellaring but will be drunk too young. Textured and balanced with racy acidity and flavours of liquorice, blackberry and vanilla. 2023-30" - Tim Atkin MW

Vega-Sicilia “Valbuena 5˚” Cosecha 2014 3L

R13,995.01 inc. VAT
"The 2014 Valbuena, mostly Tempranillo with some 5% Merlot fermented by plot, making a selection from their 210 hectares of vineyards, and then matured in a combination of barriques and larger 20,000-liter oak vats. 2014 is a spectacular vintage of Valbuena, and it reminds me of the 2010, perhaps a tad more elegant and less powerful. It's expressive and has floral notes on the nose along with wild berries, herbs and a spicy and smoky touch that's nicely integrated. It has good complexity and nuance, and the palate is medium to full-bodied and intense, with pungent flavors and great length and persistence. Truly spectacular! 184,684 bottles, 5,578 magnums and some large formats produced. It was bottled in June 2016." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Bodegas Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5˚ 2016 3L

"Dark violet. Powerful red and dark fruit preserve, pipe tobacco and potpourri aromas are complemented by exotic spice, mocha and incense flourishes. Sappy and energetic in character, offering palate-staining blackberry, cherry liqueur, floral pastille and spicecake flavors underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Gently chewy tannins build steadily on an impressively long, focused and penetrating finish that leaves smoky mineral, floral and juicy dark berry notes behind." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2021 Magum (09, 10, 11)

"Saturated garnet. An expansive bouquet presents an array of dark fruit and floral qualities that are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, vanilla, pipe tobacco and cedary oak. Stains the palate with concentrated, smoke-tinged cherry liqueur, cassis, fruitcake and candied licorice flavors, braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent depth as well as energy and finishes extremely long and chewy, with resonating florality and sneaky tannins. This is the 2021 release for this always-intriguing wine, and it seems to be leading with its structured, 2010 component right now." - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2020 (08, 09, 10)

"The NV Único Reserva Especial 2020 Release is a non-vintage blend of 59 barrels from 2008, 2009 and 2010, mostly Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has been getting closer to the style of the Único, and the blend is from vintages very close to the current release of Único, but somehow this year I think the blend has added some complexity to the bottled wine, which has the heart and soul of the 2010 vintage. In fact, they told me they are keeping more wine to have some older vintages to blend for this Reserva Especial, because in the last few years, the wine has been a little too young for the style that it used to have in the past. This has finesse and some of the Burgundian style of the blends of yesteryear. 17,071 bottles and 214 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2016." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

Bodegas Vega Sicilia 2015 Valbuena 5˚ 3L

Opaque garnet. Vibrant, finely detailed cherry liqueur, dark berry, exotic spice and floral qualities on the expressive nose, along with hints of mocha and incense. Stains the palate with sweet, penetrating red and dark fruit, violet pastille, chewing tobacco and spicecake flavors that pick up a vanilla flourish on the back half. Smoothly blends power and finesse and finishes on a youthfully tannic note, showing outstanding clarity and mineral-tinged persistence.

Vega Sicilia Único Reserva Especial Release 2019 (06, 07, 09)

"As I've seen in recent years, the non-vintage blend NV Único Reserva Especial 2019 Release contains younger wines than what the older releases used to me made up of. In this case, it's 2006, 2007 and 2009 and in fact contains wine from the current release of Único, so not much older. It's mostly Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) and some Cabernet Sauvignon. It had a slightly longer élevage in oak, as the blend was put in bottle in June 2015, at the same time as the 2009 Único; therefore, the 2006 and 2007 components were in oak for a longer time. It has a similar character to the 2009, perhaps a little more subtle and elegant but not really more complex, with some tannins and a medium-bodied palate." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Vega-Sicilia Unico Cosecha 2009

"I tasted a bottle of the 2009 Único blind and was taken by the freshness, the red fruit notes and the Burgundian-like characteristics of this vintage, which on paper was quite warm and dry. I also tasted the 2009 Valbuena, which is always more approachable, and was blown away by its aromatics. With time in the glass the Único opened up and got closer to the character of Valbuena but with more depth and clout, while showing extremely elegant. I tasted it again in the context of all the wines from the group, and it delivered all that I saw when I tasted it blind. It takes some time to unfurl its aromatic palette, and it feels young and somewhat undeveloped, younger than it is. It has a touch that made me think of the old vintages of Único on the nose but with very polished tannins and a soft mouthfeel that provides elegance. This is a wine that ages for no less than ten years before it's released. 2009 seems like a great vintage for Vega Sicilia, much better than what I anticipated. It should develop nicely in bottle." - Luis Gutiérrez, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
