Pierre Peters. The champagne on everyone’s lips

Champagne Pierre Péters is based in Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. It was one of the first grower producers to start selling its own champagnes in 1919. Rodolphe Péters is sixth-generation winemaker at the domaine and whose champagnes have gradually become some of the most highly respected and sought-after by collectors and top-tier restaurants alike.

Dear Reader,

Rodolphe Péters, having been involved at the family domaine since 2000, eventually took over the running of the estate from his father François in 2008. Rodolphe’s influence began long before him taking the reins, however, with the introduction of their perpetual reserve to the blended non-vintage cuvées.

To date, the family domaine presides over 18 hectares of vineyards, predominantly in the grand cru of Les Mesnil-sur-Oger. They also own small holdings in several other grand crus (Oger, Avize and Cramant). Total annual production amounts to around 80,000 bottles, which is not a lot to go around when your champagne has so sharply risen in demand.

“The Pierre Péters Champagnes stand out for their crystalline precision, energy and nuance, which makes them reference points for what Chardonnay is all about in the Côtes des Blancs and Mesnil in particular for the Chétillons. When I want to drink brilliant, pure Blanc des Blancs, I often reach for the wines of this small, family-owned estate.”

Pierre Péters’ flagship champagne is the non-vintage Cuvée de Réserve Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru, which is a blend of the grands crus villages of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant. This is arguably one of the finest non-vintage blanc de blancs around with its degree of complexity, precision and expressive character. This cuvée consists of a base vintage wine from a great year (in this instance, 2018) blended with up to 50% reserve wine. Pierre Péters’ reserve wines are based on a solera called a perpetual reserve. “In our perpetual reserve we have all these vintages (1988, 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1996, 1997) plus every other vintage except for 1999 and 2003, which were too fat and heavy”, explains Rodolphe Péters.

This edition of the Cuvée de Réserve was disgorged in March this year with a dosage of 6-7 grams per litre. We have a very limited amount of this champagne available on offer today.
