The quality and legacy of the wines of Domaine Jean-Louis Chave make them some of the most sought-after wines in international fine wine. The J.L. Chave Sélection range represents benchmark Rhône wines which boast true regional character. Both red and white, these wines are produced from a combination of declassified Domaine fruit and grapes that are grown by Jean-Louis in conjunction with other growers. When you get to experience the brilliance of Chave at a fraction of the cost of the Domaine wines, J.L. Chave Sélection is a no-brainer.
The Chave family is originally from the village of Lemps, which today forms part of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The Domaine has been passed from father to son since 1481. Today, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is the fourth biggest landowner on Hermitage with just under 14 hectares (of Hermitage’s 137 hectares) – comprising 9.3 hectares of Syrah spread across 7 different climats and 4.6 hectares of mostly Marsanne at around 80% and a bit of Roussanne at 20%.
Having taken over from his father Gérard in 1992, Jean-Louis is all about producing wines that are as pure an expression of the grape and terroir as possible. The knowledge and expertise that Jean-Louis possesses are difficult to match and it’s evident when drinking his wines.
Jean-Louis works with individual plot fermentations. His understanding of each vineyard parcel means a deep level of interpretation goes into the production of each wine, both reds and whites.

Hermitage “Farconnet” rouge 2017
100% Syrah. The grapes come from three distinctive parts of the Hermitage hill – the majority of the blend comes from Diognières, which is at the base of the hill. The next parcel is Péleat which sits above Diognières and finally, Greffieux which sits at the base of Le Méal on the hill. “Farconnet” was the name of a nobleman back in the time of Jean-Louis Chave’s great grandfather. He was actually the man from whom the great grandfather bought the Bessards parcel.
Hermitage “Blanche” blanc 2017
100% Marsanne with the fruit coming mainly from the lieu-dit “Maison Blanche” which is at the top of the Hermitage hill. The soil here is comprised of iron-rich clay and the vines are around 60 years of age. This wine is essentially made up of the best fruit that doesn’t end up in the Domaine Hermitage Blanc and is a fraction of the price.
