One of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most sought-after wines

Clos des Papes

Dear Reader,

Paul-Vincent Avril of Clos des Papes makes one of the most sought-after wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He makes just one red wine, and a very small amount of a white.

This family domaine’s vineyard holdings account for about 32 hectares planted to Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and most recently, a small amount of Cinsault. One of its plots is situated near the ruins of an ancient, 14th century papal castle, enclosed by a wall – or clos – hence the name, Clos des Papes.

”I can’t recall a single instance of tasting a Clos des Papes falling short of expectations. Even in the face of more challenging vintages such as 1997, 2002 or 2008, when other producers fell behind, Clos des Papes consistently delivered. What impresses me most is that they maintain this level of quality with just two offerings, just a red and white, without relying on any extravagant cuvées.”
Nicolas Greinacher, for Vinous

The wines of Clos des Papes have only ever been sold on an allocation basis, due to such limited availability met with high demand. With an ever-strengthening relationship with Paul-Vincent, from the 2020 vintage of red, we managed to get a little more wine for South Africa. We decided to make this available on a first-come, first-served basis.
