One for the Bordeaux lovers

In February 2020, the classification system which ranks Bordeaux’s cru bourgeois producers was redrawn. The 14 highest-ranked châteaux are now known as the new Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel estates. On offer today are a limited number of original wooden cases containing one bottle each of all 14 estates from the 2019 vintage. At less than R8,000 per case, this is the epitome of qualitative value in Bordeaux.

It was following the French Revolution when noble lands were divvied up and the estates behind today’s châteaux, owned by the working ”bourgeois”, began to carve out their own spaces in the market. Fast-forward through a murky more recent history, and as of February 2020, the category of Crus Bourgeois du Médoc returns to an official classification with three quality tiers. The classification rewards châteaux over a five-year period and the intention behind it is to give weight to this category of wines which is in fact an integral part of Bordeaux – that is, wines which offer great quality and at reasonable prices.

The 2020 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc comprises 249 châteaux: 14 crus bourgeois exceptionnels, 56 crus bourgeois supérieurs and 179 crus bourgeois. This classification will apply to vintages 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

On offer today are just twenty cases of 2019 vintage crus bourgeois exceptionnels containing a total of 14 bottles: one bottle each of the top 14 châteaux.
