The highly anticipated 2020 vintage of “The 1947” Chenin Blanc from Steytler of Kaapzicht has just been released. Produced from the second-oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard block in South Africa, this wine is one of our country’s most coveted and sought-after white wine releases.
Steytler’s “The 1947” Chenin Blanc is produced from old bush vines planted by Danie Steytler Jnr’s great-grandfather in 1947. The vineyard has been registered as a Single Vineyard and is the second-oldest Chenin Blanc block in South Africa. Originally 6 hectares in size, only 1 hectare of the very low yielding vineyard remains. The grapes are handpicked and then whole-bunch pressed. The pressed juice is allowed to ferment naturally in 500L French oak barrels. Of the 2020 vintage, just 1,800 bottles were produced.
Ratings and tasting notes by leading critics have yet to be released, but a snapshot of British Master of Wine Tim Atkin’s impression of the wine from the past few vintages is as follows:
2014 vintage: 92 points (South Africa 2015 Special Report)
2015 vintage: 93 points (South Africa 2016 Special Report)
2016 vintage: 96 points (South Africa 2017 Special Report)
2017 vintage: 95 points (South Africa 2018 Special Report)
2018 vintage: 95 points (South Africa 2019 Special Report)
2019 vintage: 95 points (South Africa 2020 Special Report)
The 1947 Chenin Blanc 2020
Growing conditions in 2020 were very good and this latest bottling of 1947 is showing magnificently. Of the 1,800 bottles released by the farm, our allocation consists of a percentage of this so availability really is very limited. We suggest getting what you can and allowing for a few years in bottle. Bravo Danie!

A reminder to our customers that last year we began discussions with Danie Steytler over Great Domaines being able to offer its customers one white and one red wine, from South Africa, that would overdeliver on quality for the price and simply add value to an every-day wine experience with family and friends. This resulted in the release of the “Danie Jnr.” wines – exclusively curated for Great Domaines.
The 2020 Chenin Blanc and the 2018 Red Blend (mostly Merlot with some Cabernet Sauvignon) are produced from vines planted in old weathered granitic soils on the north-western slopes of the Bottelary Hills, 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean. All fruit is 100% Kaapzicht estate-grown.
