Old vine Assyrtiko heritage

Dear Reader,

The average vine age here is 70 years, and the oldest vines are over 200 years old. This is Estate Argyros on the Greek island of Santorini and Assyrtiko is the grape – a viticultural time capsule and piece of fine wine alchemy.

Founded in 1903 and with fourth-generation of Matthaios Argyros currently at the helm, the Argyros family presides over about 120 hectares of organically-farmed old vines. These are trained to grow in basket shapes close down to the ground, therefore protected by the strong winds that thrash this tiny volcanic island. The vines, and indeed the resultant wines, are unlike any other in the world.

”As for Producer of the Year, it’ll probably be a while before someone knocks Estate Argyros off that perch. The quality across the range is exceptional, and it is very much the leading light of the island.”
Tim Atkin MW, Santorini 2023 Report by Peter Pharos

Atlantis White is the introduction to the white wines of Estate Argyros. This is a blend of mainly Assyrtiko, with smaller proportions of Athiri and Aidani, produced from vines at sixty years of age or older. Fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures, this is a wine to be enjoyed young.

The flagship wine is the Santorini Assyrtiko. This is produced from meticulously selected parcels of vines, some of which are over 100 years of age. Fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures and aged for two months in stainless steel tanks on the fine lees, this is the wine at the very heart of the family estate.
