In October last year, we released our very first offer on the wines of Domaine des Closiers from the Loire’s Saumur-Champigny. Today is likely to be the last time we are able to share such an offer. This estate is easily one of the most exciting to emerge from the Loire in recent times and at the price for the wines, we were fortunate to secure our annual allocation when we did.

”The wines…show a very elegant, discreet and refined gastronomic style…elegance, finesse and natural, well-balanced vitality. The grand crus can be exceptional…”
Stephan Reinhardt for Wine Advocate

Dear Reader,

Located just a few kilometers from Saumur, on the banks of the Loire, this Domaine presides over 15 hectares of vines (95% Cabernet Franc and 5% Chenin blanc) in the heart of the Saumur-Champigny.

Anatole de la Brosse, formerly a strategy and management advisor to a large consulting firm and holder of a degree in oenology, decided to pursue his passion for wine fulltime in taking over Domaine des Closiers in 2019. De la Brosse had purchased the estate from a grower who only ever sold off the grapes to négociants and worked all 15 hectares on his own.

Michel Chevré, who worked alongside Thierry Germain at Domaine Des Roches Neuves, together with Nady Foucault, who was instrumental in the success of the coveted and almost mystical Clos Rougeard (also part of the GD portfolio), consult for Domaine des Closiers. Biodynamic principles are applied in the vineyard and the winery has recently been kitted out with a host of new equipment. All barrels used come from First Growth estate in Bordeaux, Château Haut-Brion.

Three cuvées are produced at Domaine des Closiers and all 100% Cabernet Franc: Les Closiers, a blend of parcels, and two single site wines in Les Coudraies and Trézellières, the latter of which was only released at the start of the year so we will have it on our next consignment.

We have a mixed six-bottle case on offer today, comprising the Les Closiers and Les Coudraies, both from the 2020 vintage. Order your case today to be first in line to be offered upcoming vintages from Domaine des Closiers – arguably, one of the most important new domaines to emerge from the Loire in decades. At the time of tasting the maiden vintage (2019), leading French critics, Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, even remarked that the wines were the best Saumur-Champigny they had tasted in ten years!

”The 2020 Saumur-Champigny is…almost velvety…In its light bodied frame, there is plenty of primary, red berry fruit that deserves drinking in youth; there’s the merest touch of pencil lead, no greenness and a touch of spice….A really excellent wine with great drinkability.”

”While light in body, the 2020 Les Coudraies is a seductive style that enters with a certain amount of juicy fat and then pow!…excellent purity of fruit, transparency and a certain delicacy as it floats through the mouth…It’s really rather good…It’s one to watch.”
