News from our SA producers: important dates to diarise

Great Domaines SA-Producer-news

Dear Reader,

There has already been some activity in the market with new releases for 2023 from some South African producers. With April now behind us, at Great Domaines we now look ahead right through until November to provide you with a breakdown of what is being released and when.

Together with the actual wines being released, the respective winemakers will be with us to present them to our customers. Details of each release will be shared in due course, but for now, please mark your calendars with the dates we share below. If you have any questions or wish to discuss any of the releases, please speak to your Account Manager.

ALHEIT VINEYARDS | Tuesday 13 June

This is the official nationwide release date for Chris and Suzaan Alheit’s 2022 vintage of Cape heritage white wines. The farm conducts their allocations to their private members list from 25 May until 2 June. The wines will be available from Great Domaines from 13 June.

KAAPZICHT’S STEYTLER ”The 1947” Chenin blanc| Thursday 15 June

South Africa celebrates Freedom Day on 16 June each year, and this also so happens to be International Chenin Blanc Day. The Steytler family chooses to release the new vintage of their Cape Heritage Chenin blanc, The 1947, at the same time.

RALL WINES| Thursday 6 July

This is the official nationwide release date for Donovan Rall’s wines. We recently spoke to Donovan and he confirmed another release of his Méthode Ancestrale, so be sure to add this to whatever you manage to get of his wines this year.

COLMANT CAP CLASSIQUE| Friday 28 July

This has now become the annual release date for Colmant. JP Colmant and Paul Gerber exclusively produce multi-vintage Cap Classique – also referred to as ”non-vintage”, this is the same philosophy adhered to in Champagne in order to achieve a consistent, high quality sparkling wine that is a hallmark of the Maison’s style.

DAVID & NADIA| Tuesday 1 August

David and Nadia Sadie’s range of single vineyard Chenin blanc have become South Africa’s very own Grand Cru white wines. On 1 August, the 2022 vintages will officially be released along with their four flagship wines: Chenin blanc, Aristargos, Grenache noir and Elpidios.

SAVAGE WINES| Thursday 24 August

Off the back of Duncan Savage being named Tim Atkin MW’s Winemaker of the Year for 2022, we all look forward to a new set of wines from Duncan later this year. On 24 August, the 2021 Red and 2022 White, together with Duncan’s single site wines will be officially released nationwide.

TEMPUS| September (exact date to be confirmed)

The 2022 vintage of Tempus (the wine produced in partnership between Great Domaines and Sadie Family Wines) will only be revealed on release day, a date in September still to be confirmed. Production is limited to just one tank and averages out to just 600 bottles every vintage.

DAMASCENE and MOYA MEAKER| October (exact date to be confirmed)

We caught up with Jean Smit in March and there are some exciting things happening with both Damascene and Moya Meaker. These wines are fast becoming some of the most sought-after in South Africa!

NEWTON JOHNSON VINEYARDS| November (exact date to be confirmed)

If the 2022 vintage of the family’s Walker Bay Pinot noir is anything to go by, the new set of Family Vineyards wines and Single Vineyard Pinots set for release in November are primed to be some of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde’s very best bottlings from 2022.
