Muga Rioja Reserva 2018. Like a Springbok bomb squad.

Bodegas Muga Rioja

The 2018 vintage in Rioja presented its challenges and the Muga family made the call to declassify all fruit that normally goes into producing the top wines, and focus it all on bottling the best possible Reserva. As such, just like a Springbok bomb squad, Bodegas Muga’s Reserva took the field as reinforcement and to great success!

Dear Reader,

Situated in the historic Railway Station District (Barrio de La Estación) of the town of Haro in Rioja Alta, Bodegas Muga was founded in 1932. This is relatively young in Rioja terms, but Muga is undoubtedly one of the most highly respected Bodegas in the region due to their unwavering commitment to tradition, quality and the overall philosophy held very dear by the family. The 2018 vintage is a good case in point. Due to the challenging vintage, no Gran Reserva Prado Enea, Torre Muga or Aro were produced. In other words, the 2018 Reserva contains a healthy proportion of grapes from these vineyards.

The Reserva is a very important cuvée to Muga, and when it comes to the wines, it’s all about concentration and elegance across the range. It’s traditional in Rioja to use American oak, but Muga adopted French oak during the 1980s as it imparted more elegance in the wines. The very best oak is sourced from France and barrels are then made onsite at Muga in their cooperage. No stainless steel is used at all during any stage of the winemaking process – for any of the wines.

The 2018 vintage of Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha tinta (Grenache noir), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano.

Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva Red 2018

”Textbook stuff from the Mugas…Youthful, structured and refreshing, it’s the kind of Reserva that will reward cellaring but will be drunk too young. Textured and balanced with racy acidity and flavours of liquorice, blackberry and vanilla.”
92 points Tim Atkin MW (September 2021)

”…has pretty, slightly fresher notes of darker, almost blue fruits as well as violets, spring flowers, and cedary oak. More medium-bodied on the palate, it shows the fresher, elegant style of the vintage, has beautiful tannins, no hard edges, and outstanding length on the finish.”
91 points, Jeb Dunnuck (June 2023)
