'Super-ripe black cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice are front and center in Luciano Sandrone's 2015 Dolcetto d'Alba. This is an especially ripe, flamboyant style, even for the year. Readers should plan on giving the 2015 quite a bit of air, as it is quite reduced, even by the standards of Dolcetto, a grape than naturally tends to be reductive. One of the most iconic and well-known producers in the Barolo region, Luciano Sandrone’s story is quite incredible. Luciano’s first exposure to the world of wine was as a cellar hand at the age of 14. After many years of saving, he spent his life savings on purchasing his first vineyard in Cannubi in 1977. His maiden vintage in 1978 was made in his parents’ garage, and he could only work the land on weekends thanks to his day job. Today he has 22 hectares of vineyard planted on the steep hills of his estate. After taking the wine world by storm after a perfect score from Robert Parker in 1990 his production has since swelled to 100 000 bottles a year. Not too shabby for someone who started with only a few vines…
Years of refinement in his wine-making techniques has only improved the quality of the final product. His style reveals a respect for the firm traditions of Barolo wines, but also appreciates the modern advances in wine-making. Every vintage up to 1999 was crafted at home. In 1998 he started constructing a winery, which now sits proudly at the foot of the Cannubi hills.
Sandrone focusses on lower yields from his vines, and produces across all of the area’s signature varietals. Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo all feature as single varietal wines, but it is his Barolo wines that stand out. Two are produced: one a blend across the vineyards - the Le Vigne; the other a single-vineyard - named the Cannubi Boschis. New oak is kept to 10% in the cellar, in 500 liter tonneaux barrels. This is done for 12 months to add structure and complexity. The final product extends across both traditional and modern styles - refined and restrained yet very approachable.
Whilst Barolo can be enjoyed at a young age, there is significant aging potential without the risk of losing character.
This is a family affair. Luciano’s brother, Luca, is in charge of managing the vineyards and Barbara, his daughter, takes care of exports and being an exceptional host. They all have a keen interest in South Africa, so our plan is to get them here as soon as possible.
