"The Grenache-dominated 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Piedlong has a distinct saltiness, as well as terrific Grenache charm in its sweet strawberry and raspberry fruit, dried flowers and sandy/loamy soils notes. It is impeccably balanced, has no hard edges and very polished, fine tannin. I like it now, but it will keep for a decade." - Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate

Vineyards & vinification:
Vinified with plenty of stems and aged all in foudre
The Brunier family has for over a century been making red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that are heavily influenced by their terroir. Also the owners of Châteauneuf-du-Pape domaine La Roquete and Les Pallieres in Gigondas, Le Vieux Télégraphe is the domaine they call home.
From their first vintage in 1900 by founder Hippolyte Brunier, their wines have evolved over time, gaining in balance and refinement. The estate has also grown in that time, now with 65 hectares of vineyard under the ownership and care of Hippolyte’s great-grandsons, Daniel and Frédéric.
Named after an old radio signal tower, their name translates to “old telegraph.” Only four wines are produced: red and white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, their flagship, and red and white Le Télégramme, their second label.
Winemaking is kept very traditional, from the varieties grown to the techniques in the cellar and the way wines are matured. After harvest, all bunches are de-stemmed, except where de-stemming might break the skins of the grape or otherwise damage the grapes. Fermentation takes place in traditional 100 hectolitre wooden vats. The grapes are fermented together, regardless of vine age - except for vines below 25 years, which are fermented and matured separately. Once fermentation has completed, the wine is transferred to concrete vats for a period of nine months, before spending 12 months in large and used 70 hectolitre vats.
Their flagship, largely Grenache, with Mouvedre, Cinsaut and Syrah, is grown on the legendary Les Crau, a vineyard littered with the trademark stones (galets) that reflect the heat back up into the vines. This is arguably the most famous plot in all of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Once bottled, you will find ripe, concentrated and juicy wines, that gain a delightful complexity with age. Le Vieux Télégraphe is one of the most high profile Châteauneuf-du-Pape addresses.
