In 2015, Keermont Vineyards decided that the quality of the vintage demanded that its Estate Reserve required more attention. As such, there was meticulous attention paid to every last detail of this red blend and to release it, when ready, as Keermont’s true flagship wine. This blend is the Keermont “Amphitheatre” and the 2015 vintage is the maiden release.
Alex Starey and his team at Keermont Vineyards take their time. Meticulous work in the vineyard is followed through in the cellar and wines are only released when believed to be ready for the market. The maiden release of the 2015 “Amphitheatre” is the ultimate example of all of this.
This leading Stellenbosch estate is set in a naturally-formed amphitheatre between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountain ranges. What was previously known as the “Estate Reserve”, for Keermont’s flagship wine only the best fruit from selected vineyard sites on the farm go into this blend that is meant to be distinctive, unique and that portrays the character of the farm’s terroir. This is the Keermont “Amphitheatre”.

Grapes from each vineyard parcel are selected according to strict criteria and all harvested by hand. Once at the winery, each parcel is also vinified separately, in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. The 2015 “Amphitheatre” spent 19 months maturing in French oak barriques (first, second and third fill) before being bottled by hand without filtration on 21 November 2016. It then spent 5 years maturing in the Keermont cellar.
There aren’t many South African red wines that are kept back and matured for as long as the “Amphitheatre” 2015 has been. Keermont has removed the challenge many of us face in not being patient enough before pulling the cork on a wine. The 5 years that this wine has spent in bottle at the estate makes a significant difference. The aromas are restrained and an elegant mix of herbs, black olives and cured red meat. There is wonderful balance on the palate with a layer of freshness which tells you this wine is built to age a lot more.
The 2015 vintage in Stellenbosch was an excellent one and Keermont joins a host of classic wines from the region and from this vintage with the 2015 “Amphitheatre”. This wine is a sumptuous expression showcasing some of the very best from the Helderberg.
