GD Offer

In a league of their own. Il Poggione

It’s good to have Il Poggione back in the GD cellar. This is one of the largest wineries in Montalcino and year after year, they manage to maintain an enviable level of quality, producing not only one of the region’s best Brunellos, but also one of its most attractively priced.

Dear Reader,

Following our maiden consignment of wine from Tenuta Il Poggione (the highly impressive 2014 vintage), we have had to be patient for more to arrive due to the state of the world and the impact on international shipping. The wait is over. We recently received both the 2015 and 2016 vintages of the Brunello, together with the 2018 Rosso di Montalcino.

Situated on the southern slopes of Montalcino in the Tuscan village of Sant’Angelo in Colle, Il Poggione enjoys a warm microclimate that is regulated by cooling winds. Varied vineyard exposures and elevations also combine to produce very elegant and balanced wines.

The Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese and the grapes come from the estate’s oldest vineyards, which are planted between 150 and 450 metres above sea level. Grapes are harvested by hand and then once back at the winery, undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to French oak barrels where it is matured for three years. Once in bottle, the Brunello is matured further at the estate before being released to market.

The Rosso di Montalcino is also 100% Sangiovese and the grapes come from the estate’s 15 year-old vineyards, planted at the same elevation as the Brunello vineyards. Grapes are harvested by hand and then once back at the winery, follow the same winemaking process as for the Brunello. The wine is then transferred to a combination of French oak barrels and smaller barriques for six months’ maturation.

“Il Poggione continues to set the benchmark for uncompromising quality, which is all the more remarkable considering it is one of the largest wineries in Montalcino…Simply stated, you’d be hard-pressed to find more dependable bottles of Brunello with this combination of quality and price point.”
Eric Guido for Vinous | November 2020

Our offer today comprises a 6-bottle mixed case, containing one bottle of the 2015 Brunello, two bottles of the 2016 Brunello and three bottles of the Rosso 2018.

We received a bit less of the 2015 Brunello which is why there is just the one bottle. But, together with the 2016, this mixed case is made up of three 97-point Brunellos and three fantastic bottles of Rosso which are ready to drink now – all for just less than R 3,000.

Only 30 mixed cases available.
