If you could bottle your mother as a wine

Just like all the moms out there, no one wine is the same. GD has handpicked six wines to celebrate Mother’s Day – each one with its own personality. Your mom might be some or all of these. Either way, they are to be enjoyed with the special women in our lives on Sunday 8 May.

Dear Reader,

Vibrant and gracious 
The non-vintage Brut Rosé from Colmant Cap Classique gets its beautiful colour and fresh berry aroma from the Pinot noir which dominates the blend. This vibrancy is complimented by Chardonnay which brings balance, poise and energy to the wine. There is a degree of seriousness in this bubbly which is courtesy of 15% reserve wine making up the blend.

Confident and giving 
There are unlikely many people who have knowingly had a white 100% Fernão Pires from South Africa. Pieter Walser of BLANKbottle Winery found a vineyard between Darling and Hopefield on the West Coast and for this cuvée of his, the original Kortpad Kaaptoe, Pieter blends four different pickings of the same vineyard: an early, fresh picking, two optimally ripe batches and a later, riper one. This wine is in your face but is beautifully balanced. This is a wine to share and to enjoy with fragrant and even spicy food.

Elegant and gentle 
This is a deftly crafted Chardonnay. Domaine de Montille’s négociant Bourgogne Chardonnay is vinified in 600-liter oak barrels but when drinking it you would not think it saw any wood at all. It is steely and fresh on the palate with a fine line of acidity coursing through it. The aromatics on it are both fruity and saline. Everything about this wine seems meticulously assembled.

Deep and thoughtful 
The wines of Lebanon’s legendary Château Musar are in fact very distinctive, but this 2013 Red needs time in bottle to reveal its layers. There is complexity and depth to Musar’s flagship red wines which have been bewitching enthusiasts for years.

Alluring and beautiful 
This is Gamay noir from Beaujolais’ Fleurie cru and produced by true legends of Burgundy – Domaine Lafarge. Under the label Lafarge-Vial, this 2017 vintage of Fleurie is a blend of three parcels. The seductive blueberry and raspberry bouquet intermingles with floral notes, while on the palate the wine is tightly knit and softly grippy.

Sweet and charming 
Just 2,400 half-bottles (375ml) of Keermont Vineyards’ Fleurfontein non-vintage were produced. It’s a blend of vintages 2019, 2020 and 2021 and for the first time, has Roussanne accompanying what was always exclusively Sauvignon blanc. Yellow-gold in colour, this Fleurfontein gives off aromas of dried apricot, citrus marmalade and layers of nuts and fleshy orange rind. The wine coats the mouth and its freshness has you going back for another sip.
