Weingut Dönnhoff Riesling "Tonschiefer" Trocken 2017
- Great Domaines
all ratings out of 100 points.
"Smoky, oily notes on the nose suggest the literally oily character of the rock underlying the site, Oberhäuser Leistenberg, in which this bottling always originates. To an even greater extent than with the corresponding Gutsriesling, the wine combines palpable density with an admirable sense of lift. Here, the concentration is expressed as pith; there is a stronger sense of apple and lemon pip piquancy. An undertone of wet stone figures strongly in the gripping finish, all characteristics familiar from many past installments of Dönnhoff “Tonschiefer,” and combining to pull in an austere direction such as German growers and Riesling lovers are wont to call “puristic.” I wouldn’t exactly call this fun to drink; but formidable and fascinating? Without doubt." - David Schildknecht, Vinous.com
