Francois Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnes 2016
- Great Domaines
all ratings out of 100 points.
"From old vines on steep, south-facing slopes, like all of François Cotat’s wines this is produced in tragically small quantities (the total domain covers only 4.15ha). Few wines manage to express the Kimmeridgian nature of the Chavignol vineyards better than his, and they age superbly - for up to three decades, they suggest. This 2016 seems to suggest the warmth of the vineyard exposition, a little lemon mingling with the mossy freshness. On the palate it is pure and rich, suggesting stone and seaweed washed by soft rain. Limpid, long and tender." - Andrew Jefford, Decanter

Provided it is planted in the right place, Sauvignon Blanc is not particularly difficult to make. However, to have renowned wine critic Robert Parker describing your wine as “some of the finest Sauvignon Blancs I have ever put to my lips” is no mean feat. It’s no surprise that Francois Cotat is regarded as one of the best winemakers in Sancerre.
The secret lies in Cotat’s biodynamic methods: old vines which are harvested late and a philosophy of letting the fruit do its own thing. This results in a one-of-a-kind Sauvignon Blanc, rich and deeply concentrated. They also show excellent capacity for improving with age.
We are lucky enough to receive an allocation of 25 cases from this much sought-after domaine. Fans must not miss out - this is a wine that will blow away any preconceptions you may have about Sauvignon Blanc.
