Tasting Note:

"A spicier but even more restrained nose combines notes of red, blue and dark pinot fruit with those of rose petal, violet and sandalwood. This is quite ripe but there is a lovely sense of freshness and vivacity to the concentrated, muscular and superbly rich medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly seductive mouthfeel while delivering outstanding length on the powerful finish. This is firm but really quite refined and while it should age effortlessly it should also be approachable after only 7 to 8 years or so." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

About the Producer

Etienne Grivot (and his wife Marielle) took over from his father in 1990, making him the 5th generation of Grivots to make wine in Vosne-Romanée. In 1994 Etienne began to find his own voice and make a range of very fine wines. Since then he has reduced yields, fine-tuned his work in the vineyards and cellar and driven quality upwards.

The grapes are 100 per cent de-stemmed and the fermentation is allowed to begin naturally, with a little punching down before this starts. Thereafter there is no more pigeage, but there is one pumping over per day before the wines go to barrel. Four cooperages are used to avoid the signature of any one particular barrel-maker.

There is an average age of 45-to 50-year-old vines across this 15ha domaine which covers 22 vineyards (18 red) with holdings in Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, and Vougeot. The rarest of the lot is his Richebourg, which in some years we have only received a single bottle to cater for the entire South African market! We were spoilt on our last visit when Etienne and Marielle opened up a 1991 and a 1997 vintage of this hard to come by wine. We didn’t taste these - they were drunk and it was ethereal.

Etienne produces a range of stunning wines which possess real depth and class. In answer to a question over the secret of his success, he confides "there's no recipe, it's very personal and as a result it's very frustrating as one is never content".

These are very personal and undeniably fine wines, with dramatically aromatic notes of red fruits, becoming denser as you progress up the range.
