Château Lafleur’s exclusive, new ambassadors in South Africa

In May 2021, following a series of discussions between the two parties, and over a long period of time, the family of Pomerol’s Société Civile du Château Lafleur confirmed that Great Domaines had been chosen as their exclusive ambassadors in South Africa. While we wait for the 2020 vintage of Lafleur to arrive in 2023, we wanted to share both the news with you and an offer on a mixed case of wines from this iconic Bordeaux estate.

As we have mentioned before, the general system of sales in Bordeaux is one where all markets around the world are required to purchase through a system of négociants/middle men in order to obtain the wines. Some years ago we embarked on a very specific journey to work with the very best Bordeaux estates, who were willing to work directly with importers in the various countries.

This is exactly how we work with Petrus, and we are honoured to say that we now have the same arrangement with Château Lafleur – importing the wines direct from the château and on an exclusive basis, with the direct benefits afforded to price and perfect provenance.

Baptiste and Julie Guinaudeau

Dear Reader,

When it comes to the truly great names from the Right Bank of Bordeaux, very few people, if any at all, would not include Château Lafleur on the list. This tiny, 4.5-hectare estate produces an agonisingly small amount of wine – a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc – that is sought after by wine lovers and collectors all around the world.

Château Lafleur has been in the same family since its beginnings in 1872. Sylvie and Jacques Guinaudeau have been in charge since 2001 (they are the sole owners together with their three children Baptiste, Clara and Noémie), presiding over these hallowed vineyards planted in the gravel-rich soils of the plateau opposite Petrus.

The grand vin, Château Lafleur’s namesake, is without question one of the most sought-after wines in the world. As the Château’s ambassadors in South Africa, Great Domaines has agreed to distribute the wines to customers who are purchasing them primarily for drinking purposes. To this end, the same principle applies to the other wines produced by Société Civile du Château Lafleur: Les Pensées, Les Perrières and Les Champs Libres.

Localisation of Château Lafleur’s vineyard sites

On offer today are a very limited number of mixed cases. For those who manage to secure a case today, they will be included in the shortlist of customers to potentially be offered an allocation of Château Lafleur 2020 next year.

There are just 36 mixed 6-bottle cases available and each is made up of the wines listed further below. Immediately below is some brief information on the wines making up the mixed case. Obtaining this case along with general support of the Great Domaines portfolio, will be taken into account when we begin to offer the miniscule quantities of Château Lafleur 2020 vintage next year.

Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau’s home estate, Château Grand Village, is situated in the commune of Mouillac in Fronsac. Over a third of the property is planted to vines and it is here where the family’s massale selection nurseries are found. The healthy soils provide for favourable conditions to nurture old Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) cuttings from Château Lafleur. The very same team who farm the vineyards at Château Lafleur are responsible for the wines of Château Grand Village, from vineyard to bottle. The white is a blend of mostly Sauvignon blanc and some Sémillon. The red is mostly Merlot, blended with some Bouchet.

Les Champs Libres is the name of a new cuvée, first released from the 2013 vintage. It is produced exclusively from Sancerre Sauvignon blanc clones, planted on the plateau of Louima. There is not much of this wine produced and it is meant to showcase the quality of the terroir, and to be seen as a white wine from Bordeaux as opposed to a Bordeaux blanc.
