Bordeaux reds: quality and value from key appellations

Six châteaux from the six most significant appellations in Bordeaux: Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. A six-bottle mixed case for less than R 3,500. Pure Bordeaux buying  pleasure.

Dear Reader,

For the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, their dominant presence in the world of wine comes as no surprise when their native soils of Bordeaux make for the largest fine wine district on the planet. The blueprints for blends of Cabernet and Merlot were drawn up in the areas of the Médoc on the west bank of the Garonne (north to south: Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Margaux), north of the city of Bordeaux, and to the south from Pessac-Léognan in Graves – the ”Left Bank”. The ”Right Bank” consists of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, situated along the north bank of the Dordogne.

While Burgundy and its wines have the ability to get under your skin with their sensual charm, it can be said of Bordeaux that the wines burrow a pathway into your consciousness. The structure of Bordeaux reds and their beguiling dark berry fruit aromas and velvety tannins are there for the consumer to seek out in quality terms amidst a myriad of estates (châteaux) spread across several regions and sub-regions.

Indeed, the above aforementioned appellations represent the great red wine areas of Bordeaux. It can be argued that Pessac is perhaps not quite as prestigious as the others, and to this end we have curated a six-bottle selection of red Bordeaux from each of the other appellations.
