Today, husband-and-wife team Chris and Suzaan Alheit, of Alheit Vineyards, officially release their highly anticipated 2020 vintage wines. This marks the first vintage of Great Domaines having the privilege of representing them in Gauteng, and what a way to kick things off! The 2020s are a very accomplished set of Cape white wines with the Cartology leading the way.
From the 2020 vintage, Chris and Suzaan Alheit have produced six Cape white wines. There is no “Broom Ridge” or “Huilkrans” this year, but there are two new wines joining the Alheit Vineyards family.
One such new wine is the “Hereafter Here”. The 2020 is very expressive, with lots of sunshine in this 100% Chenin blanc. It’s lush with a rich mouthfeel and lingering finish. This is an excellent debut.
Easily one of the best wines of the six is the 2020 “Cartology”. The nose is vibrant and displays white floral notes amidst the layers of fruit and touch of honeycomb. The vibrancy carries through on the palate – great energy, texture and freshness. Both fans and newcomers to the wines of Alheit Vineyards should buy as much as they can of this wine.
From the expressiveness of the aforementioned wines, to the more restrained, steely “Nautical Dawn” 2020. The elegance, poise and overall structure of this wine suggests it will age very well. Give this wine some time and enjoy peeling back the layers.
When tasting the 2020 “Magnetic North”, the question came up whether we would be able to identify this wine blind as a South African Chenin blanc. The wine is truly profound and without doubt one of this country’s very best white wines.
The other new wine is the “Monument Sémillon”. It has an enticing nose of spiced fruit and this follows through on the palate. As with the other wines, it demonstrates excellent balance. The future is bright for this wine.
Lastly, we have the “Hemelrand Vine Garden”. With just 5% Muscat, the 2020 is all about this varietal on the nose with that typical rose-water perfume. It’s a very pretty wine and a delight to drink.
Alheit Vineyards line-up
Due to the nature of Chris and Suzaan’s production, there is never a lot of wine to go around and therefore, availability on most of the wines from us is unfortunately very limited. Please speak to your account manager about the wines and we will do our very best to accommodate your request. Preference will be given to those who expressed interest following the news we shared in July of Alheit Vineyards joining GD’s portfolio.
