A Magnumificent time of year

Why buy wine in Magnum (1.5 litre)? Or rather, why not? Apart from both sparkling and still wine ageing better in larger format bottles, a magnum placed on a table surrounded by family and friends speaks to the nature of sharing, generosity, celebration and laughter. 2021 is drawing to a close so here are some magnums to consider for both your own enjoyment and as a perfect gift for someone who has everything else but still likes something special.

Dear Reader,

Your reputation as a host this festive season is primed for a glossy finish if you bring out magnums of wine for your guests. Furthermore, if you don’t happen to drink all of them now, you can be comforted by the fact that (if stored correctly) they will be good for the next cause for celebration, even if some years from now. This is because large-format wines age more slowly.

In every bottle of wine sealed under natural cork, you will see a small space between the cork and the wine, with this space taken up by oxygen. The presence of this oxygen is essential if your intention is to hold onto the wine so that it develops. In larger bottles, the proportion of wine that is exposed to oxygen in the air is smaller, which leads to a slower process of oxidation. In simple terms, oxidation is a process that will witness a great bottle of wine take on secondary and then tertiary characteristics, following its initial primary, fruity stature. Truly great wines will age towards a peak in their life and you ideally want this journey to last as long as possible.

Whether you buy magnums for the lunch or dinner table this festive period, or wrap them up and gift them to those close to you, we have you covered. Below is a shortlist of magnums in our cellar. Please click through to our website to see the full assortment. We also have some very slick gift boxes for magnums so speak to your account manager for details.
