great domaines - gateway to the fine wines of europe

Dear Winelover,

We are very excited to be able to offer the new vintages from two of our favourite white producers, namely Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet and Domaine Pierre Yves Colin-Morey. Since the wine arrived 3 weeks ago, we have taken the liberty of doing some “quality control” with lots of the bottles and decided an offer needs to go out before we drink it all!

What can we say about the 2008 whites from Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet? Well, each bottle we have opened has been hugely impressive and offers fantastic value. The wines are fresh with slightly less acidity compared to the 2007 vintage.
The high percentage of old vines they are fortunate to work with, assist in good ripeness levels (both in terms of sugar and phenolics). Don’t forget their value reds- very competent and well made wines in the context of their appellations. They have followed up their stunning 2007s with magnificent wines from the 2008 vintage.

The other producer on offer is that of Domaine Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. His miniscule operation utilizes some family vineyards (he is Marc Colin’s son) and he buys in some of the finest raw materials to make a spread of wines that are pure, classy and quite simply spectacular.
He picked slightly earlier than most so avoided the exotic notes found on lots of the other 2008 whites. His 2008s continue down the same quality path as his 2007s, but have a touch more flesh. Buy what you can.

DOMAINE JEAN-CLAUDE BACHELET:

“Brothers Benoit and Jean-Baptiste Bachelet have returned to help their father Jean-Claude turn this once steady but unspectacular domaine into a rising star.” – Allen Meadows

Bourgogne Rouge

A pungent pepper and fresh red berry fruit nose gives way to solidly complex middle weight flavors that possess good richness and mid-palate fat as well as limited rusticity on the linear and lingering finish. This offers very good if not exceptional quality for what it is. Drink 2011+

St. Aubin "Derrière la Tour Vieilles Vignes" Rouge Premier cru

This is also very pinot in character with airy and cool red currant and wet stone aromas that complement the slightly tighter and more precise if leaner middle weight flavors that seem to ooze minerality on the longer finish that is finer but less accessible at present. Overall, there is a bit more underlying material present here. Drink 2014+

Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes Rouge

Here the nose more closely resembles that of the Bourgogne with its peppery character that suffuses the blue and red pinot fruit aromas that also display a hint of the sauvage that can be found on the serious and earthy flavors that possess good depth on the solidly persistent and fleshy finish. Drink 2014+

St. Aubin "En Remilly" Premier cru

By contrast to the reductive state of the prior wines, the elegant and pure aromas of white flower and lemon soar from the glass and complement perfectly the racy, detailed and beautifully focused middle weight flavors that dance across the palate while imparting an ample stoniness on the tension-filled and enduring finish. A classic En Remilly that should reward 5 to 7 years of cellar time. Drink 2014+

St. Aubin "Murgers des Dents de Chien" Premier cru

As it usually is, this is a distinctly bigger and richer wine and while it doesn't have quite the same level of refinement as the En Remilly, it's not far off plus it has a slight edge in underlying material as well. There is good concentration with ample dry extract and near perfect balance. In a word, terrific. Drink 2014+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Les Encégnières" Premier cru

The reserved nose features notes of earth, herb, citrus and floral nuances where the citrus and earth continue onto the rich, full, concentrated and muscular flavors that also possess a beguiling mouth feel and real finishing power. They don't call this a mini-Bâtard for no reason! Drink 2014+

Puligny-Montrachet

A touch of unabsorbed SO2 will probably dissipate before the bottling and even now it's not enough to significantly detract from the pretty acacia, honeysuckle and spiced pear-suffused nose that is followed by relatively rich and round flavors that manage to retain a good sense of cut and tension on the vibrant and balanced finish. Very fine if not truly sensational quality at this level. Drink 2014+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Boudriotte" Premier cru

As one might reasonably expect, this has an ever-so-slightly more elegant nose where notes of fresh cut citrus, pear and a hint of resin can be found. The mildly earthy, rich, supple and generous medium-bodied flavors retain a good sense of focus and outstanding length. A very fine Boudriotte. Drink 2015+

Puligny-Montrachet "Sous le Puits" Premier cru

Fairly strong reduction renders the nose difficult to properly evaluate though there is good freshness and energy in the mouth as the detailed, lemony and mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors possess fine depth, good extract and an explosive finish. This has the potential to be an outstanding effort and should offer 6 to 8 years of cellar upside. Drink 2015+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Blanchots Dessus" Premier cru
(from vines planted in 1927)

This is both slightly more refined and a bit more elegant as well with very fresh aromas of white peach, pear, lime and floral notes that introduce with a flourish the rich, powerful and impressively scaled flavors blessed with excellent concentration and striking length. The immediate proximity to Montrachet is evident as this is a big, powerful and driving wine. Drink 2015+

DOMAINE PIERRE YVES COLIN-MOREY:

“...a new white wine producer who has impressed me a great deal... Fans of pure white savoury burgundy are encouraged to try these wines” - Jancis Robinson

St. Aubin "En Remilly" Premier cru

Here the citrus influence is even more apparent with a high-toned, airy, pure and almost cold nose that complements the intensely mineral-driven flavors that are palate staining and explosive, all wrapped in an austere and bone dry finish. I quite like this but note that the understated and austere style will not be for everyone. Drink 2013+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Chenevottes" Premier cru

Here too the sulfur is quite strong and renders the nose more difficult to read though it appears to offer an array of citrus nuances as well as being the first wine to display any overt wood influence. The medium weight plus flavors are rich, full and intense with good balance and excellent length. This should age well over the short to medium-term. Drink 2013+

Puligny-Montrachet "Champs Gain" Premier cru

A soft nose of airy but ripe honeysuckle and citrus notes where the latter can also be found on the textured and lightly mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess good richness and lovely intensity on the sappy and lilting finish. This is an understated wine of finesse. Drink 2014+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Baudines" Premier cru

An airy, cool and distinctly lemon-lime suffused nose also offers up notes of stone and saline that complements to perfection the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that possess excellent precision on the explosive and palate staining finish. Baudines is, in my view, one of the under rated terroirs of Chassagne and this example only adds to that impression. Drink 2014+

Chassagne-Montrachet "Caillerets" Premier cru

This is also airy, cool and ultra elegant with a similar nose that has a bit more floral character in evidence. The detailed, driving and wonderfully delineated middle weight flavors are flush with a forceful dose of minerality on the almost painfully intense and lingering finish. A classic Caillerets. Drink 2015+
